Studio Brown creates vibrant, timeless landscapes that thoughtfully connect people and communities with the natural world. By combining broad contextual vision with deep technical expertise, we design spaces that feel rooted, intuitive, and resilient.
WHO WE ARE
STUDIO BROWN IS A THRIVING WOMAN-OWNED LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE STUDIO BASED IN BOSTON, MA.
Originally established in 1996 by Bill Brown and Michael Sardina (as Brown + Sardina, Inc.), the firm built a strong reputation in the region, and a national and international portfolio of work. In 2021, Bill’s daughter Natalie Brown took the reins as owner and president, ushering in a new generation of leadership while preserving Brown and Sardina’s foundational design ethos and deep expertise. And Bill continues to work at the studio as a managing principal today.
Now a multi-generational collective of designers, planners, and technicians, Studio Brown brings that foundational wisdom as well as fresh, new perspectives to our work. You can see it in our studio: a lively, collaborative environment where seasoned expertise and new ideas push each other forward. The work is grounded in connection: to our history, to each other, to our clients, and to the communities who will be impacted by our work in the future.
STUDIO BROWN BRINGS A COMPETITIVE ADVANTAGE WITH OUR WOMAN-OWNED BUSINESS (WBE) CERTIFICATION, AS WELL AS A DEMONSTRATED COMMITMENT TO DIVERSIFYING LEADERSHIP AND NEXT-GENERATION DESIGN.
WHAT WE DO
We are landscape architects and designers that bring a holistic approach to every project, considering surrounding context, community needs, and grading and site planning. We collaborate closely with clients to steward their aspirations and resources, as well as the natural ecosystems impacted by our design. This results in landscapes that are rooted in their place, embraced by the community, resilient, and sustainable.
We focus on creating vibrant, inviting spaces that feel intuitive and inclusive for everyone. As advocates for accessibility and realists around budgets, we scale solutions that remove as many barriers as possible for people to experience the natural world.
How We Work
We listen
We pay close attention to each client’s vision and goals, how they work and how best to work with them. Our focus is on transcending our clients’ vision while elevating the experience of all people who will use the space we will design.
We process
Our thinking is informed by a broad and deep portfolio of experience and our own perspectives, informed by the values we believe inform the best design: connection, stewardship, vibrancy, attention.
We translate into design
People receive and process information in different ways so we create plans, perspectives, and diagrams to accommodate their needs and relay information. With creativity and attention, we create impactful and inspiring design while mindfully stewarding our clients’ resources.

LEADERSHIP
Natalie Brown leads the studio with a perspective shaped by her own experience as a person with dyslexia, which not only impacts her work, but the way the entire studio works. Reading a site as a whole picture before arriving at the details results in design that is deeply attuned to its surroundings. Paying close attention to the people who will use a space results in stronger connections to the natural world. And understanding that everyone processes information differently makes us more attuned to clients and more intentional about how ideas are communicated and explored. That same empathy extends into the community, where Natalie is a strong advocate for neurodivergent students and their learning environments, an effort that sits at the heart of our growing work on outdoor classrooms and other learning environments.
