Located on a constrained urban site in Gloucester, the new East Veterans Elementary School creates a vibrant and flexible outdoor environment that supports learning, recreation, and community connection. Working within the challenges of a tight site, the landscape design carefully organizes circulation, recreation, and gathering spaces to maximize usability while maintaining safe and efficient access throughout the campus.
The site design includes two age-appropriate structured play areas that separate younger and older students, creating safe and engaging outdoor recreation environments tailored to a variety of developmental needs. A series of garden beds integrated throughout the campus provide opportunities for outdoor learning and hands-on interaction with nature, extending educational experiences beyond the classroom.

At the front of the school, a central outdoor teaching plaza serves as a welcoming community and learning space. The plaza incorporates natural boulders discovered on-site, grounding the project within Gloucester’s coastal landscape and creating informal seating and gathering opportunities for students and staff. Careful attention was given to circulation, grading, and site organization to transform a compact property into a dynamic and highly functional educational landscape that supports the school’s collaborative and community-focused mission.
