Springfield’s new Federal Courthouse is a unique nautilus form, an arched front facade, glassed encased lobby, and soaring canopy which makes a bold statement to the surrounding institutional character. The form of the structure is integral in protecting three ‘heritage trees’, a copper beech, linden and black walnut. There mature canopies, which range between 200 and 500 years in age, blend the building’s distinctive forms with the neighborhood. Brick and white concrete paving work in collaboration with the straightforward planting plan (groundcover, lawn, evergreen shrubs and ornamental trees) to create a simple base for its articulate facades. Brown + Sardina provided full landscape architectural and planning services for vehicular and pedestrian pavements, grading, irrigation, and landscape.
