The transition from Brown + Sardina to Studio Brown began in 2021, when Natalie Brown became majority owner and president of the firm. Yet while leadership had changed, the name still reflected our founders. Over the following years, the question became not whether our identity would evolve, but how to honor our history while reflecting that evolution.
The search for a new name took time. Ideas were discussed, debated, revisited, and occasionally discarded. The goal was never to simply modernize the brand or create something trendy; it was to find a name that reflected the collaborative nature of the studio and the collective energy behind the work. Studio Brown reflects the reality of the practice today: a creative studio where ideas are shared, challenged, refined, and developed together.
The word “studio” became particularly important. It speaks to process rather than hierarchy, emphasizing creativity, collaboration, and exploration. It reflects the way we work every day, through sketches, conversations, teamwork, and the exchange of ideas. More than a company name, Studio Brown represents a culture.
The visual identity followed a similar path of exploration. Working closely with designer Paul Voulgaris of 67a2 Media, we spent months studying precedents, testing concepts, refining compositions, and evaluating countless color combinations and logo iterations. Every element was considered carefully, from typography and layout to the balance between professionalism and personality.
The final design draws inspiration from the bold graphic language of the Bauhaus movement and the optimistic color palettes of the 1960s and 70s. Clean lines and structured compositions provide clarity and order, while color blocking and vibrant tones introduce warmth, energy, and a sense of play. Confident without being rigid; professional without being predictable; and contemporary while still acknowledging tradition.
Landscape architecture exists at the intersection of art, ecology, engineering, and human experience. The new visual identity sits at that same intersection representing a brand that feels grounded and expressive, much like the landscapes we create.
Most important, the new brand is not about leaving something behind. It is about carrying a legacy forward. Brown Sardina established a foundation of design excellence, trusted relationships, and meaningful work that spanned three decades. Studio Brown will build on that foundation while embracing new perspectives, new opportunities, and the next generation of leadership.
Our vision may be different, but our core values remain the same. Thoughtful design. Lasting relationships. Meaningful places.
